In brief, the Cycling Award For Young Volunteers and Racemakers courses teach youngsters between the ages of 14 and 18 how to become involved in the running of a club, officiating, coaching and then how to organise races.
This course was first brought to our attention by Andrew Pitt towards the end of last year. Since December I have been speaking personally to as many of the senior riders as possible. Their enthusiasm has been both infectious and gratifying, inspiring me to arrange for British Cycling to come to our club to run the course.
The courses are normally run separately but I've managed to convince Josie Heffernan to run them back to back as our youngsters are already very knowledgeable about cycling. Each participant will receive a folder containing information to support the course and a very stylish Racemakers T-shirt. And it's FREE!
Once the course is complete the young volunteers, with support, will prepare and put on a race or two. They will also be able to help with PPV free-wheel sessions to increase the number of volunteer hours needed for each of the course awards on offer, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
So, if I have not had the opportunity to discuss this with you personally and you would like to be involved, please respond to this email or come and see me during lunch at tomorrow's Prize Presentation. It would be fabulous to have a big commitment from Palmer Park to, again, show British Cycling what an incredible club we have.
And just so you know, you won't be alone on the course. Both Andrew Conn and myself will be attending!
Chris
