PPV Fix Wheel Track Accreditation

To assess riders abilities and readiness to move on to fixed wheel riding we have developed the following skills requirements to be demonstrated in freewheel sessions.

  1. Ability to come to a halt and safely dismount unassisted (This must be without 1-legged hopping/scuffing of the supporting leg).

  2. Ability to get feet in and out of pedals/clips unaided.

  3. Ability to start off the fence un-assisted and rejoin the fence unassisted

  4. Ability to switch from “tops to drops” 5 times within 100m without significant waver.

  5. Ability to ride for 50m in a straight line with either hand held continuously off the bars and to the side (as if signalling to turn).

  6. Ability to ride shoulder-to-shoulder (e.g. bars within 30cm) with another rider for 100m without deviation.

  7. Ability to ride through an 8 cone slalom (spaced 1.5m apart) and then a 20m cone “tunnel” (with inside edges 20cm apart) without clipping any cones.

  8. Ability to complete a flying 1-lap effort in under 60sec

Once riders can demonstrate the above skills they will be invited to attend one of the regular introductions to fixed wheel sessions, where they will be coached in the new skills required to transition onto fixed wheel cycling.

Once the above skills, that have been achieved in freewheel, can be repeated and following additional skills can be demonstrated on a fixed wheel bike the riders will receive a PPV fixed wheel accreditation certificate and will then be able to attend fixed wheel sessions.

  1. The ability to follow behind an experienced rider on fixed wheel for 2 laps of the running track staying no more than 2m behind, but never overlapping wheels, as the lead rider varies the speed.

  2. The ability to follow behind an experienced rider on 2 laps of a “lumps and bumps” exercise to the satisfaction of an observing coach.

Any visiting riders will need to be assessed by the head coach for their first session, depending on experience of the rider and the coach’s knowledge of the rider they may be required to undergo a minimum assessment of skills 9 and 10 above before they are granted an accreditation for PPV fixed wheel sessions.
